How to Move WhatsApp Chats to a New Phone (and What Breaks Along the Way)

The short answer

Moving WhatsApp between phones running the same operating system takes fifteen minutes using a cloud backup or a local direct transfer. Crossing between Android and iOS requires a factory-reset target phone, a physical cable or stable local Wi-Fi, and Apple or Google migration apps. Some data never survives the jump: call logs, custom notification sounds, and media files that were offloaded to clear storage stay behind. If you switch phone numbers at the same time, update the number inside WhatsApp on the old handset first.

Android to Android

You have two official ways to move your messages from an old Android phone to a new one: a cloud restore through Google Drive or a local direct Wi-Fi transfer.

Route 1: Direct device-to-device transfer

This method works without uploading your database to Google Drive. Keep both phones side by side, connected to the same Wi-Fi network, with location services turned on.

1. Open WhatsApp on the old Android handset.
2. Tap the three dots in the top right corner, then tap Settings.
3. Tap Chats, then tap Transfer chats, then tap Start.
4. Accept the required local network and location permissions to display the QR code scanner.
5. Install WhatsApp on the new Android handset from the Google Play Store.
6. Open WhatsApp on the new phone, accept the terms, and enter the same phone number.
7. Tap Continue when the app prompts you to transfer chat history from your old phone.
8. Scan the QR code shown on the new phone using the camera on your old phone.
9. Keep both devices unlocked and close together until the percentage counter reaches one hundred.

Route 2: Google Drive cloud backup

If you do not have both phones physically present at the same time, use a Google Drive backup.

1. Open WhatsApp on the old phone.
2. Tap Settings, then Chats, then Chat backup.
3. Select your Google account under Google Account settings.
4. Set Frequency to anything other than Never, then tap the green Back Up button to force an immediate sync.
5. Wait for the upload progress bar to finish completely.
6. Open WhatsApp on the new Android handset after inserting your SIM card or activating your eSIM.
7. Verify your phone number via SMS code.
8. When WhatsApp detects the cloud backup, tap Restore.
9. Wait for the message database to download before tapping Next. Media files will continue downloading in the background.

Fallback: Local database file copy

If Google Drive fails or you need an offline restore, WhatsApp writes an encrypted backup file to local storage every night at 02:00.

1. Open a file manager app on the old phone.
2. Navigate to Internal Storage/Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Databases. On older Android builds, this path is Internal Storage/WhatsApp/Databases.
3. Locate the latest database file, usually named msgstore.db.crypt15 on current builds, or msgstore.db.crypt14 on older ones.
4. Copy this file, along with the entire Media folder from the parent directory, to an SD card or a computer via USB cable.
5. Install WhatsApp on the new phone but do not open it yet.
6. Paste the Databases and Media folders into Internal Storage/Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/ on the new phone.
7. Open WhatsApp, complete phone number verification, and accept the prompt to restore the found local backup.

iPhone to iPhone

Moving WhatsApp between iPhones is straightforward, provided your iCloud account has enough free storage space to hold the entire media library.

Route 1: Direct transfer during iPhone initial setup

Apple's native setup assistant moves WhatsApp app data directly when transferring everything from an old iPhone to a new one.

1. Place the new iPhone next to the old iPhone during initial setup.
2. Follow the on-screen Quick Start prompts and choose Transfer from iPhone.
3. Keep both phones connected to power until the full system transfer completes.
4. Open WhatsApp on the new iPhone.
5. Enter your phone number and confirm the SMS verification code. The app will open with your full chat history intact.

Route 2: iCloud backup restore

If you set up the new iPhone manually as a new device, use an iCloud backup.

1. On the old iPhone, open iOS Settings, tap your name at the top, tap iCloud, and verify that iCloud Drive is toggled on.
2. Open WhatsApp, tap Settings in the bottom navigation bar, tap Chats, then tap Chat Backup.
3. Tap Back Up Now and wait for the upload to complete. If you need videos included, toggle Include Videos on before tapping the button.
4. Take the old iPhone out of service or remove its SIM card. Do not wipe the old phone yet.
5. Open WhatsApp on the new iPhone and confirm your phone number.
6. Tap Restore Chat History when the prompt appears.
7. Keep the app open on your screen until the database restoration finishes.

Android to iPhone

Moving chat history from Android to iOS is the most fragile migration path in WhatsApp. You cannot restore an Android Google Drive backup onto an iPhone. You must use Apple's Move to iOS utility on the Android device.

To run this transfer, your Android phone must run Android 5.0 or higher, and your iPhone must run iOS 15.5 or higher.

The primary operational constraint is that your iPhone must be on its factory setup screen. If you already set up the new iPhone, signed into your apps, and arranged your home screen, you have to wipe the iPhone completely to use this tool.

1. On your Android phone, download and open the Move to iOS app from the Google Play Store.
2. Turn on the new or factory-reset iPhone and place it next to the Android device.
3. Follow the setup steps on the iPhone until you reach the Apps & Data screen.
4. Tap Move Data from Android. A six-digit or ten-digit code will appear on the iPhone screen.
5. Enter this code into the Move to iOS app on your Android phone.
6. The iPhone creates a private Wi-Fi network. Tap Connect on the Android phone when prompted.
7. On the Transfer Data screen on Android, select WhatsApp from the list of checkboxes.
8. Tap Start on the WhatsApp screen. WhatsApp on Android will prepare your database for conversion. You will be signed out of WhatsApp on Android once this process finishes.
9. Tap Next to return to the Move to iOS app, then tap Continue to transfer the files over the local connection.
10. Finish the remaining iPhone setup steps after the transfer completes.
11. Install WhatsApp from the Apple App Store on your iPhone.
12. Open WhatsApp, enter the identical phone number, and tap Start when prompted to complete the data migration.

iPhone to Android

Moving your history from an iPhone to an Android device requires a USB-C to Lightning cable, or a USB-C to USB-C cable if you use an iPhone 15 or newer. The Android phone must be factory fresh or completely reset.

1. Power on the new Android handset and connect it to your iPhone using the physical cable.
2. Follow the on-screen setup prompts on the Android phone.
3. When prompted to transfer data, trust the connected iPhone and select apps and data for migration.
4. When the transfer tool reaches WhatsApp, a QR code appears on the Android screen.
5. Scan the QR code using the camera on your iPhone. This opens WhatsApp on iOS and displays the Move chats to Android screen.
6. Tap Start on the iPhone to begin data preparation.
7. Disconnect the cable only after the Android setup assistant confirms that data transfer has completed.
8. Open WhatsApp on the Android phone, verify your phone number, and tap Import when prompted.

Voice notes and media, specifically

Voice notes and media files are the most common source of data loss during phone migrations.

WhatsApp saves storage space on older phones by offloading older media files from local flash storage, keeping only a low-resolution thumbnail in the chat thread. When you scroll back three years, the image looks slightly blurry until you tap it to download the full asset from Meta's servers.

Meta does not hold that media on its delivery servers forever. Once a file ages out, the only copy left anywhere is whatever the phone kept. If an old voice note was cleared from device storage to free up space, the migration tool copies the reference and nothing behind it.

When you open that thread on the new phone, you will see the voice note audio bar, but tapping play will produce an error stating that the audio file is no longer available on local storage. If that voice note contained an oral agreement on pricing or delivery terms, that record is gone permanently.

Changing the phone number at the same time

If an employee gets a new phone along with a new phone number, never register the new number on the new phone right away. Doing so creates an empty account, leaving the old conversation history trapped on the previous device under the previous number.

Always change the phone number inside WhatsApp on the old handset before starting any migration steps.

1. Insert the new SIM card into a working secondary phone to receive the verification SMS, or ensure your new eSIM is active.
2. Open WhatsApp on the old phone with the old SIM still active.
3. Tap Settings, then Account, then Change Number, then Next.
4. Enter the old phone number in the top field and the new phone number in the bottom field.
5. Tap Next. Choose whether to notify your contacts about the number change.
6. Enter the six-digit SMS code sent to the new phone number.
7. WhatsApp now re-keys your existing local database to the new phone number.
8. Run a fresh manual backup to iCloud or Google Drive.
9. Move your SIM to the new phone and proceed with the standard migration steps detailed above.

1. Verify SIM ownership. Confirm the phone number is on a corporate mobile plan owned by your company, not a personal contract belonging to the individual worker.
2. Audit cloud storage capacity. Check the available storage on the connected Google Drive or iCloud account. Ensure there is enough space to hold the full uncompressed WhatsApp database and all media files.
3. Execute a forced manual backup. Do not rely on the scheduled overnight backup. Open WhatsApp Settings, tap Chats, tap Chat Backup, and tap Back Up Now. Wait until the timestamp confirms completion.
4. Export critical accounts manually. For top-tier customer relationships, follow the steps to export individual chat histories as raw text and media files. Store these files on secure company storage.
5. Verify the new handset before wiping the old one. Complete the number registration and backup restore on the new device. Open three key client threads and verify that messages, documents, and voice notes from more than two years ago load and play correctly.
